Title: Wastewater surveillance as a useful tool for public health

Biography

Marta Korinkova is a microbiologist with expertise in environmental and public health microbiology, and recent experience in conducting wastewater-based surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 at a national level. Their work involves the analysis of microbes from a variety of samples, including soils, composts, waste, healthcare-associated waste, wastewater sludge, and both raw and treated wastewater. In their current role, the focus is on protecting public health by ensuring safe waste handling, conducting SARS-CoV-2 wastewater surveillance, and supporting the development of national legislative documents.

Previous research activities include participation in the international project OHEJP FED-AMR, which explored the role of free extracellular DNA in the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance across ecosystem boundaries along the food/feed chain, incorporating One Health principles. They have also been involved in national projects related to waste and soil microbiology. Most recently, their project activities are associated with wastewater reuse, including involvement in DIGITWIN (Digital twin of water reuse technologies) and the integration of wastewater surveillance into public health systems through the JA EU-WISH (EU-Wastewater Integrated Surveillance for Public Health) initiative.
